Jos Rakastat or internationally If You Love is a musical depicting young love between to young people but endangered by her dark secret which is that she fatally hit his father with a car. That's it. The story with it's amnesia plotlines is horrible shit from start to finish and it's brought to you by amateur actors hamming it up and succeeding only in flashes here and there. The songs are not original but Finnish pop culture landmarks integrated into the film. You'd think it would help identify better by hearing familiar and beloved songs in this setting but that's not the case since the versions of those songs here are half-assed, calculated copies at best. Partially I am biased because I still don't get musicals but that has nothing to do with recognizing bad performances and a consept which must have looked amazing on paper but not so much seen as a finished product. There is some soul to be found here and there but ultimately this doesn't bode too well for any senses.

Directed by Danny Boyle (& Loveleen Tandan in India)
Starring Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, Madhur Mittal, Irrfan Khan

I only now got to finally see this film and it was a great experience with it's joyous execution and feel good themes. It is however nowhere near the best work from it's director Boyle who has made many films that surpass this one. For example, I'd rate both Sunshine (2007) and 28 Days Later.. (2002) before Slumdog. The Bollywood approach to an essentially western film is somewhat of a new one but it works just fine because the themes are still universal. Lost love, greed and hope are themes which break language barriers and to be honest, it also doesn't hurt to have an able cast all the way from the child actors upwards. Slumdog Millionaire was a black horse in the Academy Awards. After all the film was meant to be released straight to DVD but it eneded up going home with 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Music and Best Cinematography. All of them deserved. It is a classic film already but hopefully not the one people remember Boyle for in the future.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski
Starring Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, James Frain, Michael Sheen, Daft Punk, Cillian Murphy

The original TRON (1982) was a milestone in special effects movies and though the film looks dated today it still remains an inspired adventure. TRON: Legacy picks up the story almost thirty years later with breathtaking effects just like the original in it's day. Bridges' (who also plays the film's villain, Clu with a digitally rejuvinated look) character Flynn disappeared over twenty years ago and now his son Sam (Hedlund Death Sentence, Four Brothers) finds his way to ol' dads workshop and soon finds himself in the computer world and on the Grid. TRON: Legacy is a techno adventure so to speak. It's also a magnificent and gorgeous experience to see in High Def on Blu-ray since the Grid is almost entirely mirrored surfaces and beautiful visual details. Some trademark scenes from the original have been sharpened to the sequel such as the bike chase and they all look amazing. TRON: Legacy is a massive visual treat and a decent adventure.

RED (2010)

Directed by Robert Schwentke
Starring Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Brian Cox, Karl Urban, Richard Dreyfuss, Rebecca Pidgeon, Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, James Remar

RED (Retired Extremely Dangerous) is an action comedy that could've easily turned to shit in lesser hands. Luckily director Schwentke (Flightplan) gets the quirky material and the result is a funny action comedy powered by legendary character actors just having fun and blowing shit up. The plot is whatever it is, it's not important, we're here to see Malkovich act crazy and paranoid. We're here to see Freeman dress as an over the top African ambassador for a job and most of all we (or at least I sure am!) are here to see Mirren grab various automatic weapons and laying waste to endless droves of bad guys. It's a shame Malkovich already started to cash in on these action capers years ago with horrible pieces of shit such as Eragon and Mutant Chronicles because now it doesn't feel so special anymore to see him relax in an action role unlike Mirren who has never done a balls to the wall action movie before, but rather these so called art house dramas. Willis plays his standard grinning action guy and is almost a minus among the fun. A very entertaining flick and a deserved pad on the back for the superb supporting cast since Cox, Borgnine and Dreyfuss also have fun on the side lines.

RED on loistava toimintakomedia, jota on ennen kaikkea ilo katsoa loistavien ja arvostetuiden veteraaninäyttelijöiden pitäessä hauskaa kerrankin vieraassa genressä. Malkovich toki on aloittanut toimintaleffoilla rahastamisen De Niron tapaan jo jokunen vuosi sitten ja valitettavasti hirveillä kuratekeleillä kuten Eragon ja Mutant Chronicles, mutta esim. klassisesti koulutettu brittidaami Mirren (The Queen) on aidosti hilpeä nähdä massiivisen rynkyn takana suolaamassa pahiksia täyteen reikiä. Willis esittää jälleen sitä samaa pilke silmäkulmassa virnuilevaa toimintajehua ja on omana kliseenään melkein miinus, mutta onneksi ohjaaja Schwentke (Flightplan) pitää Willisin ja leffan toiminta/komedia-balanssin hienosti hanskassa. Kaikin puolin viihdyttävää rytinää josta etenkin keskeisten näyttelijöiden mukana olosta kicksit saavat lämpenevät suurella varmuudella.

Directed by Michael Apted
Starring Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, Ben Barnes, Will Poulter, Tilda Swinton, Bruce Spence, (voices) Simon Pegg, Liam Neeson

I remember watching the Narnia TV series Silver Chair (1990) as a kid and being enchanted by it's feel despite the show's modest scale. Perhaps that's one of reasons I haven't been able to truly enjoy these big scale, highly polished film versions. They do look great and are executed very well, but to me at least feel somehow soulless. This is the third movie in the series and two more are still promised to come in 2014 and 2015. Dawn Treader is directed by Apted (Enigma, Bond film The World Is Not Enough) who's never been comfortable with action but pulls the stops fairly nice this time. Still, after he made his ill fated Bond film he said in an interview that he didn't even know why the producers wanted him for the job. I can't help but wonder the same in the case of him directing Narnia 3. The movie is somewhat entertaining but the magic you're supposed to feel just isn't there. For me at least.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader at IMDb

Directed by Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud
Starring (voices) Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Jemaine Clement, Jack McBrayer, Danny McBride

There have only been a hadful of really good and funny CG animated movies since Toy Story back in 1995. The recent years have produced only few truly great ones such as The Incredibles (2004) and the two Madagascar (2005 & 2008) films. I'm not at all a fan of Shrek or any of these hacky wannabe clever inside-joke-movies. And though Despicable Me doesn't fall into that category, it's still light on laughs, even half decent jokes and only scores with a couple of nice set-ups. The only really worthy reason to see this film is Carell's performance as the "evil" main character of Gru. Carell uses funny accents and his voice has that special quality which by itself has made audiences love his performances and has been crucial especially in the character of Maxwell Smart in Get Smart (2008). Carell doesn't have to be seen in order to be hilarious. The minions are funny too.

Despicable Me eli suomalaisittain Itse Ilkimys on koko perheen animoitua komediaseikkailua keskinkertaisimmillaan.

Directed by Jonathan Liebesman
Starring Aaron Eckhart, Ramon Rodriguez, Ne-Yo, Bridget Moynahan, Cory Hardrict, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Peña

Battle: Los Angeles is what alien invasion movies have been lacking for an eternity: all out, balls to the wall action. The film doesn't try to rise above the expectations set around it, but very importantly it does however meet them. Chances are if you loved Ridley Scott's magnificent urban warfare classic Black Hawk Down (2001), you'll love this action movie. It's urban warfare at it's purest with the somali militia replaced with those pesky E.T.s with surgically attached machine guns.

Sgt. Michael Nantz (Eckhart) is being granted his retirement when the world comes under attack from alien invaders. He's immediately recruited back to assist a platoon as they set out to reclaim the city of Los Angeles in a massive fight against the extra terrestrial enemy.

Director Liebesman (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) has created an energetic action film filled with macho military bullshit but if that doesn't bother you and you're a friend of well executed big scale action, Battle: Los Angeles is likely going to rub you exactly the right way. The film is huge in scale but still in a different way from most of the traditional alien invasion movies that've come before in the sense that it's very intimate in it's approach of the event itself. The destruction is seen from the point of view of the platoon and the fight takes largely place on the deserted streets and neighborhoods of L.A.. The film also borrows heavily from it's obvious predecessor Independence Day (1996) and even a bit from District 9 (2009). The bottom line is that Battle: Los Angeles delivers what it promises in the trailers and posters: action heavy war against aliens with the best special effects available. If that isn't your cup of tea, stay away but otherwise dig in because this is entertainment and fun turned up to eleven.

KITEYTETTYNÄ SINIVALKOISILLE
Battle: Los Angeles tai suomalaisittain jostain helvetin syystä World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles on puhdasta machotoimintarytinää sitä kaipaaville ja muiden kannattaa suosiolla skipata, sillä tätä on turha tuijottaa lukulasit nenän päässä ja pohtiva ilme pärställä. Leffa on massiivinen skaalaltaan, mutta silti virkistävän erikoisella tavalla, sillä lähes koko filmi koetaan keskeisessä osassa olevan sotilasjoukkueen näkökulmasta ja vaikka taisteluita alieneita vastaan käydään myös taivaalla, on toiminta pääasiassa kaupungin hylätyissä naapurustoissa ja itse taistelu on puhdasta kaupunkisodan kuvausta. Battle: Los Angeles lainaa runsaalla kädellä Ridley Scottin kaupunkisotaeepoksesta Isku Mogadishuun (2001), sillä erolla että huumepäissään rytistelevät somalitaistelijat on korvattu avaruuden önkkimönkeillä.
