THE AVENGERS (2012)

Directed by Joss Whedon
Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgård, Clark Gregg, Gwyneth Paltrow, (voice) Paul Bettany

The Avengers has to be the single most elaborate film project ever designed. You have to remember that it's not just this single movie, but a whole series of blockbuster films that were all leading up to this effort. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger all had their own introductiory flicks and supporting heros, Black Widow (Johansson) and Hawkeye (Renner) both had minor roles in those films.

So was it all worth it? Yes. Very much so. Though honestly, even if The Avengers would've bombed we still would've had two great Iron Man movies (I know the second one took flack from fanboys but personally I loved it), because let's face it: Downey Jr.'s eccentric billionare Tony Stark is and has been the cream of the crop the whole ride and his films alone deserve a deep appreciating bow. As was the case in his own films, Stark steals the show in The Avengers as well, though the other superheros don't fall short thanks largely to a solid script from creative TV icon Whedon (who's still paying off his debt on my shit list for Alien Resurrection). All the Avengers have their own plotlines and they work quite well without being heavy enough to drag the film down as a whole.

Shame the studio decided against rehiring Norton as Bruce Banner/Hulk (I guess out of being too demanding and hands on with the material) but Ruffalo sits well in the role that's now been filled by three able actors since Ang Lee's artistic but still very solid version back in 2003. Lee's film is also another example of the elaborate design that's gone into "the Avengers initiative" since in order for the character arcs to match for this film, the studio had to disregard Lee's Hulk entirely and reboot only five years later with The Incredible Hulk and work from there.

The Avengers is as epic as a summer flick can possibly be with it's state of the art CGI and sheer scale. Whedon isn't very experienced as a director having been mostly a writer but his scifi action film Serenity, which was a spin-off from Whedon's own cult TV show Firefly, was a good rehearsal and he has no hang-ups about action and lets it rip for the whole buck. This film will surely satisfy nearly all who go see it because not only is it a great action movie (unlike Alien Resurrection), it is also a functioning character piece (unlike Alien Resurrection).

The Avengers (eli suomalaisittain myös nimellä Kostajat) on kaiketi kaikkien aikojen massiivisin yksittäiseen elokuvaan johtanut projekti, sillä täytyy muistaa että vaikka kyseessä on nyt vain yksi elokuva, sen valmistelu on vaatinut kokonaista viisi ison budjetin filmiä. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man-leffat, Thor ja Captain America tulivat kaikki edellä, jotta valtavirran katsojat (johon sarjakuviin perehtymättömänä itsekin kieltämättä kuulun) tietäisivät varmasti keitä The Avengers-elokuvan päähahmot ovat.
