IRON SKY (2012)

Directed by Timo Vuorensola
Starring Christopher Kirby, Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Udo Kier, Stephanie Paul, Peta Sergeant

When The Phantom Menace was announced and people knew that a new Star Wars trilogy was on the way, it was pure excitement. Lucas himself was going to write and direct the fucking thing which got fanboys doing goddamn backflips. Then the film opened and everyone came out thinking "That was it? Really, was THAT it?!" And rightfully so. The generated hype was far more fun than the film itself. Sadly, the same can be said about this Finnish effort, Iron Sky. When it was announced that the creators of amateur internet phenomenon Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning were making a tongue-in-cheek film about nazis on the moon, everyone went ape shit. Myself included. Déjà vu of The Phantom Menace came to mind when I exited the movie complex.

Iron Sky looks absolutely gorgeous and the effects are on the level with any top Hollywood franchise but everything else is less than expected. Vuorensola does his best with the enormous project in hand but the finished product cannot escape the look and feel that he is still an amateur only this time with more money. His character direction is horrible and though this isn't a drama and it might not matter as much, it sadly ruins most punchlines since they're not delivered properly. Also whatever satire, political or otherwise, is being sought, it all fails because the script never elaborates them beyond the premises themselves. For example in Iron Sky Sarah Palin (or at least a character VERY much based on her) is the President Of The United States and that's it. There's no critical satire about her as a person or as a politician, at most only as a hard ball candidate running for a second term in office. Boring. Also just out of curiosity, when dealing with a racially themed film, why does it always have to be that a white woman falls for a black man? Why not a black woman falling for a white guy? Is that somehow politically incorrect? It'd sure as shit be at least something not seen in a long while. The only film which comes to mind where the pairing is the other way around is Lakeview Terrace, Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington being the couple with Sam Jackson's character not condoning the relationship. So guess it is. Can you say "filmmaker's white guilt"?

The nazis at least themselves have a few refreshing and amusing moments, thanks largely to a solid performance from Otto (Tomorrow Never Dies, Der Untergang) but then again B-movie legend Kier is a shallow cardboard character as the Führer of the moon. What a criminal waste. Iron Sky is only seldom as clever and funny as it wants to be and it feels like Vuorensola has forgotten the kind of humor and sincere silliness that made Star Wreck such a joy to watch. This film will no doubt be a cult hit at least here in Finland but personally I can't help but feel short changed. I admire that big, effect driven films are surfacing out here and that someone has the balls to do something different from the usual misery themed relationship dramas. It would still help that these films were made by professionals.
