THE THING (2011)

Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Ulrich Thomsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle

I don't think anyone was asking a sequel of any kind to John Carpenter's horror classic of the same name from 1982. Nonetheless here we have a prequel and though it doesn't hold a candle to the original by any means, the film does have it's gruesome moments. Most important points are that The Thing prequel pretty much stands on it's own and has as fresh ideas as it can and doesn't ruin the original by giving away too much of Carpenter's masterpiece.

One of the biggest problems is that if you've seen the original, you know how the prequel will (or has to) turn out. Like the Star Wars prequels which only connected the dots left open by the original trilogy. What's important then is how it plays out. Winstead is not miscast nor does she a bad job, but the original had an all male cast which worked perfectly for it and honestly there's no reason why that wouldn't have been the case here. This film didn't need a Ripley of it's own but maybe this decision came out of the current politically correct climate. Another problem is that The Thing prequel plays like a modern slasher movie. Most of the time is spent lurking slowly down ominous corridors with the flame thrower waiting for the monster to jump out. The original film didn't use much of these simple and cheap scare tactics but it didn't really need to. The script was better, the cast was great and like Carpenter rightfully said himself, it is the best film of his career. I'm not saying the prequel is the total opposite, it's not, but as a die hard fan of the original one just cannot feel but a bit disappointed.

Also shame Dennis Storhøi pulled out of the project shortly before filming. He was the best thing in John McTiernan's The 13th Warrior (1999) and this would've been his first Hollywood film since then. I would've loved to have seen him in this.
