Jackass the TV series kicked off on MTV in 2000 and since then audiences have been battling over matters of taste. Some consider the show to be wicked funny and others look down their noses and refuse to give in to the joyful toilet humor and that little kid inside them. I for one have always loved the antics of these guys and will continue to do so. The Knoxville and friends are getting older, sure, but has that slowed them down? Shit no! I will give the nay sayers one thing.. it is a bit of a stretch to call these outings movies but then again if that's the only problem I have with them and the movie makes me laugh so hard I almost pissed myself, isn't that the measure of a good comedy? In my book it is. So if you've found Jackass funny in the past, you'll likely find Jackass 3D to be as funny as ever. All the set-ups aren't as funny but there are those few gems in there that border on insanely genius such as "poop coctail supreme" and "electric avenue".

Monen mielestä yli kymmenen vuotta pinnalla sinnitellyt Jackass ei ole ollut missään vaiheessa hauskaa koheltamista, mutta allekirjoittanut on saanut useat vatsanpohjanaurut näiden kundien toilailuista. Totuus on että jos olet nauranut vahingonilosta Knoxvillen ja kumppaneiden saadessa turpiin aiemminkin, tulet nauramaan nytkin, sillä kundit ovat yhtä hyvässä elleivät paremmassakin terässä kuin ikinä. Toki edelleen jotkut nyrpistelevät nenäänsä ja tiuskivat että "onpa lapsellista", mutta entäs sitten?! Jos materiaali on hauskaa ja se saa vilpittömästi nauramaan, niin itse en ainakaan aio teeskennellä olevani jotain "parempaa" ja eikö se ole hyvän komedian mittapuukin, hyvät naurut? Kyllä vain. Helvetin hauska leffa.

The American really hasn't gotten the media attention it deserves. After all we're talking about a really stylish and elegant little thriller. Clooney's performance as Jack, an assassin who's being chased by people he has pissed off is quiet, controlled and very suiting for director Corbijn's great visual style. There are no massive explosions or expensive highway chases in The American but there is however a disciplined and interesting tale of a man not at ease with his past and seeking redemption and a way out. This very approach to the execution of this film may have hurt it's potential to grab people's attention but it's also all the more reason for you to seek it out and give it a look now.

And now a bit off topic with a matter that's been bugging me: The American also features Finnish talents Björklund (Priest Of Evil, Honey Baby) and Vauramo. When it was published that they were involved in a film with Clooney, the Finnish media made a big deal out of it. The truth is that Björklund is seen in the beginning for a few minutes and Vauramo the same amount later in the picture as a mysterious Swedish (fucking hell!) assassin hunting Jack. But this happens every time. Every time a Finnish actor or actress gets a blink-and-you'll-miss-it part in a Hollywood fare it's always a huge deal for absolutely no valid reason. It was the case with Tony Halme in Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995) and we'll just have to wait and see the amount of work Samuli Edelmann has been given in the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011). Ironically, Edelmann's ex-girlfriend and fellow Finn Vera Jordanova played a significant role of the treacherous Axelle in Eli Roth's brilliant Hostel: part II (2007) and it was barely even noticed. What a bunch of bullshit. The Swedes have many magnificent people (Max von Sydow, Peter Stormare, Alexander and Stellan Skarsgård, Noomi Rapace etc) working in Hollywood. I say let's stop pretending and just admit the fact that we Finns are bit players at best in this competition. Shit.

The American on todella tyylikäs ja yllättävän minimalistinen kuvaus menneisyyttään pakoilevasta palkkatappajasta. Musiikkivideoilla ja musiikkimaailmaan sijoittuvalla Control-leffalla huomioon noussut Corbijn on luonut länkkäreiden klassikkokuvastosta lainailevan pienen ja intiimin jännityselokuvan, jossa ei ole suuria takaa-ajoja eikä räjähdyksiä, mutta tunnelmaa senkin edestä.

Suomen media teki leffan tullessa ulos ison numeron kun ilmoitettiin että Björklund ja Vauramo ovat mukana Clooneyn tähdittämässä leffassa. Oli surkuhupaisaa nähdä töllöstä traileri jossa mainostettiin heidän nimiään *ennen* Clooneya, vaikka jo siinä vaiheessa oli tiedossa että molempien roolit tulisivat olemaan korkeintaan muutaman minuutin pikavisiittejä. Onko meidän kansallinen ylpeytemme niin vähällä ostettavissa? Elokuva on toki hieno tekele ja onhan se jännittävää nähdä nuo suomalaiset mukana, mutta kovin turha haloo asiasta on silti nostettu. Samoin tehtiin aikoinaan Tony Halmeen pikkuruisesta roolista leffassa Die Hard - Koston Enkeli (1995) ja nyt hiljattain on hypetetty Samuli Edelmannin roolia tulevassa Mission: Impossible 4sessa. Koko aukeaman juttu edellä mainitusta tapauksesta kun taas ironisesti Edelmannin ex-tyttöystävän ja Helsingistä kotoisin olevan Vera Jordanovan keskeinen rooli vuoden 2007 hienossa kauhuleffassa Hostel 2 jäi käytännössä täysin huomiotta. Mitä ihmettä? Ruotsalaisilla on useita hienoja näyttelijöitä tekemässä isoja rooleja rapakon takana kuten Max von Sydow (Manaaja, Minority Report), Peter Stormare (Fargo, Armageddon), Stellan Skarsgård (Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 & 3, Mamma Mia!), edellisen poika Alexander Skarsgård (TV:n True Blood) ja Noomi Rapace (tuleva Sherlock Holmes 2 ja tuleva Alien prequel). Kyllä ollaan jälkijunassa ellei vasta laiturilla istumassa laukkujen päällä.

Serial killer thrillers are somewhat in baby shoes in Finland since, well, we hardly have any serial killers. You'd think it would be obvious that we did when you consider the amount of alcohol consumption in this country and the amount of domestic disturbance cases. There are no sadistic serial killers and so it really doesn't fit into the psyche of the Finnish mind to watch a film about a local Norman Bates and there would be no reason to make a Silence Of The Lambs-type film because it would not hold water in that regard. In Harjunpää Ja Pahan Pappi or internationally Priest Of Evil the filmmakers have set out to create something that plays with the idea of a serial killer without going full psycho so to speak. There are no suits made out of the skins of the victims.

 Timo Harjunpää (Franzén Pahat Pojat (Bad Boys 2003), Rukajärven Tie (Ambush 1999)) is a detective in the Helsinki PD and his family has suffered a loss couple of years back with the murder of their teenage daughter. The family is trying to cope but he's become estranged from his wife (Björklund The American (2010)) and youngest daughter (Salomaa). At the same time the city is plagued by strange death in the subway system. The distraught Harjunpää is put on the case but he finds himself struggling between his duty and his need for vengeange when the release of his daughter's murderer draws closer.

 Directed by the man behind my favorite Finnish film Rukajärven Tie, I had high expectations and to tell you the truth I had to watch the film twice back to back in order to really get into it. The first time around I found the first 75 minutes to be clichés one after another with the somehow maditory tragedy in the background and every time your main characters are going through something like that, it's honestly hard to stay with the film because it can just make you feel uncomfortable. The other problem I had was that I've always hated Finnish cop shows and films since they've tried to just copy the style and mood off of US cop dramas and it doesn't fit. At all. The second time around the film somehow settled on it's natural tracks and the weird thing is that I can't really explain why. Perhaps since the strong performance of Sarkola as the killer emerged more from the film and made it whole and the Harjunpää family drama felt more familiar and thus more accessible. Also, the thing I will say of this film is that it's executed and shot very well. The style is darker than usual for a Finnish effort and although it might not be Saarela's best film, Harjunpää ja Pahan Pappi still resonates very well.

KITEYTETTYNÄ SINIVALKOISILLE
Harjunpää Ja Pahan Pappi vaikutti ensimmäisellä katselukerralla pettymykseltä, sillä en päässyt mukaan Franzénin suoritukseen Timo Harjunpäänä ja koko leffan ensimmäiset 75 minuuttia vaikuttivat vain olevan draama- ja poliisisarjakliseitä loppumattomana nauhana. Ajattelin että ehken nyt vain sisäistänyt leffaa kunnolla, sillä onhan ohjaajanakin sentää oman kotimaisen suosikkini, Rukajärven Tien ohjaaja Saarela. Onneksi katsoin toistamiseen, sillä Harjunpään perheen sisäisen tragedian suoltaminen meni toisella kerralla luontevammin kun tietäen lopputuloksen pystyi tilanteeseen syventymään paremmin ja Franzéninkin henkisesti kituva pääosa meni ymmärtäen hahmon ahdinkoa hieman paremmin. Vaikkei Saarela ylitä tälläkään leffalla läpimurtofilmiään, hieno rikoselokuva Harjunpää ja Pahan Pappi on silti. Erityisesti muistiin jää Sarkola elokuvan sarjamurhaajana, sillä hän näyttelee hahmon hienosti vetämättä hommaa överiksi ja kuten kaikkien hyvien pahisroolien kanssa, hänen motiiveissaan on jotain samaistumisen varaa ja se tekee katselukokemuksesta kiinnostavamman sillä parhaimmillaan katsoja saattaa joutua pohtimaan omiakin arvojaan elokuvan edetessä. Viimeksi allekirjoittaneelle on käynyt näin katsellessa hienoa The Dark Knight-rainaa ja kuunnellessa Jokerin tekevän selkoa visioistaan. Sarkolan murhaaja on tosin myös syvästi uskovainen, mutta sillä taas ei ainakaan omassa tapauksessa ole mitään tekemistä samaistumisen kanssa.

I used to hate Ferrell with all my being. I thought he was as funny as cancer but then came Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby (2006) which was funny as shit though also largely thanks to Sacha Baron Cohen's Frenchie Nascar driver Jean Girard. After that it's again been somewhat downhill with the possible exceptions Step Brothers (2008) and Semi-Pro (2008). Now with the director of Talladega Nights returning and the cast including such killer names as Keaton, Coogan, Jackson and Johnson, my expectations were sky high but in vain. The Other Guys tries hard but the laughs are just largely not there. The supporting cast does what it can with the borderline funny material and the film offers some good set pieces but really considering the talent at hand it should be hitting all the stops and not just offering random giggles. A major problem is also that co-starring Wahlberg just isn't a natural comedian although the movie very much tries to build him up as one. Guess it's just almost impossible to top a film which has characters called Walker and Texas Ranger.

The Other Guys eli suomalaisittain Katastrofikytät on Ferrellin viimeisin yritys päästä takaisin muutaman vuoden takaiseen valokeilaan jolloin hänen komediansa tuottivat ison kasan tuohta ja olivat oikeasti huvittavia. Vihasin ennen koko äijää koko olemuksellani ja kaverin läsnäolo muuten niin legendaarisessa rainassa Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) oli silkkaa tuskaa, mutta siten tuli Talladega Nights (2006), joka oli niin nerokas ja älyvapaa leffa että se muutti käsitykseni ukkelista. Se oli toisaalta myös leffa jota Ferrell ei ole kyennyt enää vastaamaan ja mies onkin rankattu jo pariin kertaan Talladegan jälkeen Hollywoodin ylipalkatuimmaksi näyttelijäksi. The Other Guys yhdistää jälleen Ferrelin ja Talladegan ohjaajan ja omaa hillittömän lahjakkaan sivuosamiehityksen, mutta käsikirjoitus ei silti ole läheskään niin hyvä kuin sen kuuluisi olla ja mikä olennaisinta, yhden ilmeen Wahlberg EI ole luontainen koomikko vaikka hänestä tässä yritetäänkin leipoa sellaista. Pettymys.

What is it with Cameron and the most expensive films ever made? Then again they have all grossed their budgets back many times over. Fans have been whining why did he leave a gap of 12 years between Titanic (1997) and now Avatar. Well Cameron hasn't really been scratching his ass but developing the new 3D-techology, creating Dark Angel TV series and directing few deep sea documentaries.

 Jake Sully (Worthington Clash Of The Titans, Terminator Salvation) is a paraplegic marine who is sent on a mission to a new world to investigate the indigenous humanoids called the Na'vi in order to evict them from their rich woodland for a precious metal scattered beneath the ground. The human scientists use avatar bodies which are grown from human DNA mixed with the DNA of the natives (direct quote I believe). As he gets deeper into his mission, Sully soon finds himself torn between his orders and his need to live in this new world he is growing to love as his real home.

 The story itself is obviously lifted right out of Pocahontas especially after Sully falls in love with the daughter (Saldana, Star Trek, who is never seen as herself but only as the motion capture version of Neytiri) of the native leader. The bad guy in the film, colonel Quaritch (Lang) is somewhat a standard nemesis but like a friend of mine so fittingly put it, if you have to have a clichéd character, do it wholeheartly. And Lang surely does. Cameron himself has said that he has made the film partially as a commentary on how the US goes all over the world to deprive the land of it's natural resources, usually oil. The commentary has valid basis in truth to say the least and deserves to be heard. But Avatar is far more than a political statement. It is also a glorious, breathtaking look into a beautiful new world.

 I can understand if some people can't relate or get into the film comletely because the argument is that the whole film looks just took much like computer graphics. Well, it is mostly done with a computer but the effects are stunning. Maybe it's also hard because your subconscious knows it's not real since there is no such planet as the depicted Pandora and it just keeps insisting that. For me, I don't care. Avatar is a nice tale although not too original but does that really matter? For some, sure. For me? No. Cameron is a master filmmaker and knows how to move the film forward. Granted, he is cocky as hell when it comes to his ego and personally I find that more than a bit vomit inducing but the fact of the matter is that Cameron is brilliant at what he does and in Avatar he has created a true cinematic classic. Deal with it.

KITEYTETTYNÄ SINIVALKOISILLE
Varmaan jokseenkin jokainen jota Avatar kiinnostaa tippaakaan on jo nähnyt elokuvan ja muodostanut jonkinlaisen mielipiteen siitä. Mitä niihin mielipiteisiin tulee, ne ovat näyttäneet jakaantuneen kirkkaasti kahtia. Avatar on joko yksi upeimmista elokuvista tai se on pelkkää kierrätettyä tietokoneanimaatio roskaa. Harmaata aluetta ei ole tullut vastaan. Omasta mielestäni tosiasia on että Cameron on tehnyt hienon, massiivisen elokuvan, joka näyttää upealta ja on ajoittain koskettava, mutta ennen kaikkea aina kiinnostava. Tarina on toki otettu suoraan Pocahontasista, mutta onko tuolla nyt niin väliä? Se soveltuu hyvin futuristiseen scifiin. Leffa on myös esimerkillisesti toteutettu seikkailuelokuva ja väittäisin sillä olevan tietystä näkökulmasta hyvin vähän tarinan kanssa tekemistä, sillä Avatar on pääasiassa puhdasta tirkistelyn halua uuteen maailmaan sekä kulttuurien ja intressien törmäämistä jotka johtavat konfliktiin. Aivan kuten omalla pallollamme luonnonvarojen ja uskonnon nimissä. Cameron on aina ollut nerokas toimintaohjaaja ja se näkyy nyt myös tässä filmissä nostaen jokaisessa miehessä pintaan sen 8v muksun joka leikkii sotaa. Naisille on toki Titanicin tapaan kiellettyä romantiikkaa ja aivan kuten Titanicissa, romanssin ja jännityksen yhdistelmä toimii saumattomasti. Erityiset bonuspisteet menevät Langille pahiksen roolista, jonka kanssa mies on selvästi pitänyt hauskaa. Kuten kuuluukin.

Based on the actual Salem witch trials which tooks place in colonial Massachusetts in the late 1600s and written by Arthur Miller based on his play on the matter, The Crucible depicts a small town which gets taken over by religious paranoia which leeds to execution by hanging of nineteen innocent people. The film rightfully sets up strong critique on Christian fundamentalism which was rampant at the time and sad to say, still is in some parts of the country albeit they don't burn or hang people for being witches anymore. Then again how the fuck would I know, right? Anyhow, Daniel Day-Lewis once again gives a performance that leaves everyone else behind with the excetion of Scofield as the cruel, deeply religious judge of the travesty they call a trial. The Crucible also managed to bring a tear or two in the closing scene with the use of Lord's Prayer. That's a lot coming from agnostic, let me tell you.

The Crucible eli suomalaisittain Noitavaino on hieno, 1600-luvun lopun kristillistä fundamentalismia kritisoiva filmi, joka perustuu aitoihin noitavainoihin jotka toteutettiin aikanaan Massachusettsin siirtomaakunnassa ja jotka johtivat 19 syyttömän ihmisen hirttämiseen. Day-Lewis varastaa jälleen valokeilan itselleen vahvalla suorituksella, mutta hyvää vastavuoroisuutta tarjoaa Scofield julmana ja syvästi uskovaisena tuomarina tässä ns. "oikeudenkäynnissä". Elokuvan täytyy muutenkin omata emotionaalista purevuutta jos se saa loppukohtauksessa Isä Meidän-rukousta käyttämällä tipan tai pari tällaisen vannoutuneen agnostikon silmään. Kaukana viihde-elokuvasta, mutta toimii oivallisena testamenttina hienosta näyttelijätyöstä ja uskonnollisesta hulluudesta.

Based on a comedy sketch from Saturday Night Live, MacGruber is Forte's parody version of legendary TV-character, MacGyver. The genesis of the character can very clearly be traced back to the success of another SNL star, Mike Myers' character of Austin Powers. Both are parody versions of popular action icons with the clear difference of Myers being a far more talented and natural comedian than Forte. As a character MacGruber is hilarious but the script offers only a handful of good set-ups and the laughs are few and far apart. MacGruber might work as a sketch but a feature film clearly needs way more bellylaughs and better performances from supporting cast which are both absent from this incarnation. A bigger budjet would not have hurt either since it always looks cheep and campy to shoot on those factory floors with leeky pipes running across everywhere. Well always with few exceptions such as Aliens. I'll say one good thing about this film: it definitely has the best sex scenes ever filmed.

MacGruber on TV-sarja Saturday Night Liven sketsihahmoon pohjautuva parodia TV-ikoni MacGyverista. Hahmon luoja ja esittäjä, Forte on selvästi saanut kimmokkeen pitkään elokuvaan nähtyään kuinka legendaarinen toisen SNL-tähden, Mike Myersin luomasta Austin Powersista on tullut valkokankaalla. Valitettavasti siihen yhtymäkohdat loppuvatkin. Siinä missä Powers on aidosti hilpeä ja inhimillinen hahmo, on MacGruber taas aidosti koppava jopa ärsyttävyyteen asti ja lisäksi Forte ei ole yhtä luonnollinen ja karismaattinen koomikko kuin Myers. Kengännauhabudjetti tekee myös oman lommonsa leffaan, joka yrittää kumminkin esittää suuren budjetin rainaa. Yhden asian kyllä sanon loistavana seikkana MacGruberista: siinä on ehdottomasti parhaat seksikohtaukset jotka on ikinä filmattu.

Based on the novels by Kathryn Lasky, Legend Of The Guardians tells the story of two borther owls who end up on the opposite sides of brewing battle between good and evil. The corny and naive pathos that's usually dragging family films down is luckily abscent from this one. Legend Of The Guardians is dark in tone, but still enjoyable for the younger ones. Director Snyder (300, Watchmen) is a specialist when it comes to magnificent visuals and this film is no exception. He and Tarsem (The Cell, The Fall) are most likely the two greatest visual visionaries working in films today. Snyder is currently prepping the new Superman reboot but in the meantime we are allowed to expect great things from Sucker Punch (2011) which opens in April. If he can make a family film about some fucking owls work this beautifully, there are really no limits where Snyder can go.

Zack Snyder on ollut omassa tarkkailussani jo hyvän aikaa, sillä mies ei ole vielä tehnyt yhtäkään huonoa elokuvaa kohtalaisen tuoreen ohjaajan uransa aikana, jolle kumminkin mahtuu jo nyt sellaisia merkkiteoksia kuten 300, Watchmen ja zombie-klassikon Dawn Of The Deadin mestarillinen uusintaversio. Legenda Suojelijoista: Ga'Hoolen Pöllöt ei ole voinut näyttää paperilla kovin kummoiselta, mutta ohjaajan upean visuaalisen tajun ansiosta tämä animoitu perheleffa pöllöistä herää hienosti henkiin, eikä leffa edes kärsi niin usein perhe-elokuvia painavasta alleviivaavasta ja kornista paatoksesta. Jos mies osaa loihtia näin kauniin ja viihdyttävän leffan parvesta vitun pöllöjä, on aivojen arsenaalissa ihailemista.
