Directed by Kenneth Branagh   Starring Chris Pine, Kevin Costner

The previous films in the series (The Hunt for Red OctoberPatriot Games, Clear And Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears) were all prime examples of great, emotional action thrillers. Shadow Recruit wants to continue the tradition but fails in terms of tension. There's action and international intrigue but you're not emotionally invested and thus the film only leaves you with some decent set pieces and a sigh of what this could've been. Costner is by far the film's highlight as Ryan's mentor.

Costner on ehdottomasti leffan parasta antia Ryanin oppi-isänä.

Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller Starring Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum

21 Jump Street was a fun reboot of Johnny Depp's career making crime series. The sequel has a few great laughs but falls on it's ass due to lack of good ideas. It's even so clearly recycling the original's material they actually crack jokes about it in the movie. Self-irony can be a great thing but it shouldn't act as a cover for laziness in the script. You should never find yourself leaning into your armrest in a comedy like this as I did.

Directed by George Clooney   Starring George Clooney, John Goodman

It should be a punishable deed to make a boring WWII film. Inspired by real events, a group of art experts are dispatched to midst of combat to recover stolen artifacts from the Nazis. Sounds mouthwatering and the ensemble cast should make it even better, yet the film is a celebration of halfhearted filmmaking and devoid of all charm. Definition of disappointment considering the potential at hand.

Pitäisi olla rangaistava teko kyhätä tunnelmatappiollinen elokuva toisesta maailmansodasta. Tositapahtumiin pohjautuva tarina joukosta taide-eksperttejä, jotka lähetetään taisteluun hankkiakseen takaisin natsien varastamia taideaarteita kuulostaa mahtavalta, mutta tähtikaartista huolimatta tekele on karisman tyhjiö ja suorastaan turhanpäiväinen. Valtava pettymys potentiaalin huomioiden.

ALL IS LOST (2013)

Directed by J.C. Chandor   Starring Robert Redford

Not a fan of silent films? Then chances are you'll be appalled by All Is Lost. The premise of a man lost at sea is simplicity in itself, but Redford's performance isn't since the film has virtually no dialogue. It takes a great actor to pull off an endeavor like this. Difference between Redford and majority of other actors is that he makes it seem effortless.

Directed by Doug Liman   Starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt

Whatever you may think of the film's starring man in real life, as a filmmaker Cruise is dependable and solid. The movie combines Independence Day and Groundhog Day into a clever and entertaining ride but kind of runs out of ideas in the third act though the action keeps going. Bill Paxton in energetic military mode is always an added bonus.

THE BUTLER (2013)

Directed by Lee Daniels   Starring Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey

Having not seen any of Daniels' previous efforts I came to this with a clean slate. The Butler is a solid montage of key moments in oppression of African Americans through the 20th century. Though it seems to alter few facts here and there of history and it's real life inspiration, White House butler Gene Allen, the film is quite enjoyable thanks to a marvellous cast.

The Butler on vankka montaasi Amerikan mustien sorrosta läpi 1900-luvun. Ilmeisesti elokuva ottaa muutamia pikkuluovia vapauksia historian ja tosielämän innoittajansa, Valkoisen Talon hovimestari Gene Allenin kohdalla, mutta kauttaaltaan hienot roolisuoritukset pitävät mielenkiinnon kepeästi yllä.

Directed by Matt Reeves   Starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke

This is what CGI-loaded films are at their very best. The special effects are there to tell the story rather than only displaying stunning action. Andy Serkis truly is one of Hollywood's most gifted actors, yet he goes largely unrewarded since majority of his work is done through motion capture. See this film, but only if you've seen the equally superb Rise of the Planet of the Apes first.

Directed by Francis Lawrence Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Sam Claflin

Catching Fire improves on the first film on every level. The advances, usually concerning tone, are cruicial though often small but especially recruitment of Francis Lawrence as director makes a huge difference. In the previous installment the events were shown almost mechanically but Lawrence understands pace and tone better than Gary Ross. The film itself benefits from not being an origin story and going in, we know the characters and their motives. This time the supporting cast is riddled with more likable professionals you can aim your arrow at. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amanda Plummer, Jeffrey Wright and Jena Malone to name a few. Can't wait for Mockingjay parts I and II. Especially 'cause they will once again be under the direction of Lawrence and of course the final works of Hoffman.

Nälkäpeli: Vihan Liekit parantaa laatua leffasarjan ekaan osaan jokaisella tasolla.

Directed by Peter Franzén Starring Olavi Angervo, Matleena Kuusniemi, Samuli Edelmann

Tumman Veden Päällä (internationally Above Dark Waters) is the directorial debut of Finnish actor Franzén. The film is also based on his autobiographical novel. The movie tells the story of Pete (Angervo), a young boy living in a seemingly happy family where bliss is at times broken by the cop father (Edelmann, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) who becomes violent and abusive when he drinks. It's a solid debut from Franzén and the child actors manage to be beliavable. The only thing that escapes me is the fact that it truly seems to be impossible to produce a simple drama in Finland that doesn't include family abuse, murderers or serial adulterers. Guess we're just that fucked up kinda people.

Kaipa me tosiaan vain ollaan sellaista kansaa.

Directed by James Wan Starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey

Wan has established himself as a genius in horror with his haunted house flicks Insidious and The Conjuring, both excellent films that sent chills down my spine every 5 seconds. Insidious: Chapter 2 is a weird anomaly in this as it's written in a very clever way tying in with past events of part 1 in the manner of The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum. The script even offers comic relief via paranormal investigators Specs and Tucker which may be the exact reason it doesn't reach the levels of panic of the original and especially The Conjuring. A solid chiller nonetheless.

Riivattu-leffan jatko-osa käy hieman edeltäjäänsä pienemmillä kierroksilla, sillä kässärissä on annettu enemmän sijaa ja etenkin komiikkaa jo ensimmäisestä elokuvasta tutulle tutkijakaksikolle, Specsille ja Tuckerille. Ohjaaja Wan on ansaitusti vakiinnuttanut paikkansa legendaaristen kauhuohjaajien riveissä ja vaikkei Insidious: Chapter 2 aivan ylläkään Riivatun, saatikka Wanin toisen hiljattaisen tekeleen Kirottu (The Conjuring) tasolle niin kyseessä on kumminkin omaperäinen ja nokkelasti kirjoitettu kauhufilmi.

Directed by Steve McQueen Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o

This is in my opinion the first slavery themed film that truly manages to depict the terror of what's happened. Much like Saving Private Ryan was, for me at least, the war film which not only showed the events but cruicially made you feel them as well, 12 Years A Slave is a brutal true story of a free man who is kidnapped and sold as a slave. The entire cast performs admirably but the highest remarks must be given to Nyong'o and Fassbender (in his third collaboration with director McQueen) for their powerhouse roles on opposite ends of the whip. Truly a remarkable film.

ROBOCOP (2014)

Directed by José Padilha Starring Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Earle Haley, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jay Baruchel

The reboot of RoboCop might be a crucially better film for those without the experience of the original. The film is vastly different from Verhoeven's masterpiece with a new cast and a fresh script. Well, fresh may be stretching it. Standard family drama can hardly be referred to as groundbreaking.

Very little has been preserved from Murphy's (Kinnaman) heart-breaking journey of rediscovering his humanity once he's been salvaged as a cyborg. Kinnaman's RoboCop is too in touch with his human self from transformation and the pain of what he's lost doesn't enter into it. At least in any emotionally satisfying fashion, since he hasn't lost it. Murphy's family is right there the whole time and the biggest inconvenience seems to be that daddy has many metal parts and is too busy to throw hoops with the kid. Touching? Nay, clichéd. It also doesn't help that RoboCop's new design looks like shit. At least the black suit with laser visor which ironically springs to mind the comic failed designs in RoboCop 2 (1990).

The CG effects are naturally sleeker 27 years later but do we really gain anything with the upgrade? Personal opinion, not a fucking thing. The action is charged up and furious but at times without emotion. There's nothing here to rival, say, the drug factory scene of the 1987 film. RoboCop reboot has the same exact problem as the other recent Verhoeven remake, Total Recall. Both remakes look gorgeous but lack the creative soul which made the originals so legendary. Here, if you simply appreciate seeing Keaton back in the majors like I do and don't mind the increasingly mundane good guy role from Oldman, there might be something you'd buy for a dollar. The only real sincere praises I am able to give are that apparently Padilha and Kinnaman come out of this with little bit of integrity 'cause they campaigned hard for the film to be made rated R but because the budget kept ballooning, they were forced by the studio to make it more kiddie friendly. Also, the respectfully redesigned ED-209s are great and as clumsy as they ever were. Also the scene in which Dr. Norton (Oldman as this film's morally righteous (!) version of Bob Morton) demonstrates to Murphy how much of him is actually left inside the machine. Samual L. Jackson does a kind of impression of Republican soundhorn Bill O'Reilly but no-one will remember and rightfully so.

Kinnamanin esittämä kyborgi on heti muutoksesta lähtien liikaa konstaapeli Murphy uuden olemuksensa sisällä ja alkuperäisen sydäntä särkevä herääminen menetettyyn inhimillisyyteen on melko juosten kustu tällä kertaa.

Directed by Timo Koivusalo Starring Samuel Shipway, Sanni Paatso, Vesa Vierikko, Minttu Mustakallio

This is the latest in the family film series of Ricky Rapper with the title translated as Ricky Rapper and Slippery Lennart. Ricky's or Risto's mom decides to find her son a solid father figure but is too blind to the obvious choice of family acquaintance Lennart. With Risto and a selection of wardrobe to help him, Lennart starts to role play less than suitable candidates to make himself appear more suitable. Like before, the film includes musical numbers which could've easily been left out but it's understandable why they are present considering the main character. Vierikko as Lennart is by far who to thank for keeping any interest in the plot and film altogether and actually succeeds in bringing few laughs with him. Otherwise it's basic family fare. Thanks to Vierikko I give it three out of five.

Directed by Wayne Kramer Starring Paul Walker, Vera Farmiga, Chazz Palminteri, Cameron Bright, Karel Roden

Much like in the case of the previous review, I wanted to visit a piece of work from a departed talent. Running Scared is an electifying crime thriller with a pace so furious it almost parallels Crank. No wonder Tarantino likes this film since it has eccentric, corrupt characters and dialogue worthy of recognition. Have to also mention that I would never have thought that Farmiga could be as sexy as she appears in this. Also Walker, of whom I've never been a particular fan of, delivers a good performance. If he had been constantly on fire like this (no pun intended), I might've been interested in following his work with more interest. No good person deserves the fate he got and Running Scared showed us that there was potential. The circumstances just needed to be right.

Paljolti kuten edellisen tekstin kohdalla, halusin visiteerata hiljattain edesmenneen näyttelijän katalogia. Running Scared on raivoisasti etenevä rikostrilleri, jonka hektinen tahti tuo ajoittain mieleen jopa Stathamin Crank-leffat.

Directed by George Clooney Starring Ryan Gosling, Evan Rachel Wood, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman

After Hoffman's unexpected and highly unfortunate demise I decided to take on this film which had been waiting its turn on the shelf. The movie which depicts dirty politics behind the presidential campaign of Gov. Mike Morris (Clooney) starts slow but picks up pace once the idealistic facades start coming down. The statements of moral political corruption are simple and clichéd but good, solid performances keep the piece alive. Including that of Hoffman. Watching this film was melancholy to say the least, much like Killing Them Softly after James Gandolfini passed away. So many great ones taken too soon, so many poor actors still around. Thanks universe.

Kiitti vitusti, universumi.

Directed by Gore Verbinski Starring Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, Ruth Wilson, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Helena Bonham Carter, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper, James Frain

I had to write a review on this film after the Razzie noms were announced. What the fuck, really? Nominations for Depp, Verbinski, the writers, worst picture? Come on. Must've been a good year in Hollywood since The Lone Ranger has been dragged onto this list. The filmmakers aimed on copying the success of Pirates Of The Caribbean by getting the same star, director, writers and of course, producer Bruckheimer. The thing to seriously take into account is that the film is quite good.

Seems like a lot of people have judged the film way before it's release and it just became (again) one of those snowballing things to trash the film based on hype. Every year it's the same fucking thing. Stupid. Only fucking DUMB people trash films before seeing them. It's ok to have expectations, of course, but to say something is shit before even giving it a chance in hell is just wrong and those opinions don't count. Not now. Not ever. Those "opinions" should be printed on toilet paper. Depp's Tonto is not Sparrow and the movie doesn't quite reach the hights of The Curse Of The Black Pearl but it's solid entertainment with good characters and fun action set pieces. Among the worst of the year? Fuck off.

The Lone Ranger on ehdolla mm. pääosan, ohjaajan ja elokuvan kategorioissa. Ei jumalauta, oikeastiko? Tässä leffassa on lähdetty kopioimaan Pirates Of The Caribbeanin kaavaa saman tiimin turvin ja siinä missä tällaiset uhkapelit yleensä kaatuvat, The Lone Ranger toimii melko vaivattomasti ja on todella mainio komedialänkkäri. Vuoden huonoimpien joukossa? Nigga please.
