ROBOCOP (2014)

Directed by José Padilha Starring Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Earle Haley, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jay Baruchel

The reboot of RoboCop might be a crucially better film for those without the experience of the original. The film is vastly different from Verhoeven's masterpiece with a new cast and a fresh script. Well, fresh may be stretching it. Standard family drama can hardly be referred to as groundbreaking.

Very little has been preserved from Murphy's (Kinnaman) heart-breaking journey of rediscovering his humanity once he's been salvaged as a cyborg. Kinnaman's RoboCop is too in touch with his human self from transformation and the pain of what he's lost doesn't enter into it. At least in any emotionally satisfying fashion, since he hasn't lost it. Murphy's family is right there the whole time and the biggest inconvenience seems to be that daddy has many metal parts and is too busy to throw hoops with the kid. Touching? Nay, clichéd. It also doesn't help that RoboCop's new design looks like shit. At least the black suit with laser visor which ironically springs to mind the comic failed designs in RoboCop 2 (1990).

The CG effects are naturally sleeker 27 years later but do we really gain anything with the upgrade? Personal opinion, not a fucking thing. The action is charged up and furious but at times without emotion. There's nothing here to rival, say, the drug factory scene of the 1987 film. RoboCop reboot has the same exact problem as the other recent Verhoeven remake, Total Recall. Both remakes look gorgeous but lack the creative soul which made the originals so legendary. Here, if you simply appreciate seeing Keaton back in the majors like I do and don't mind the increasingly mundane good guy role from Oldman, there might be something you'd buy for a dollar. The only real sincere praises I am able to give are that apparently Padilha and Kinnaman come out of this with little bit of integrity 'cause they campaigned hard for the film to be made rated R but because the budget kept ballooning, they were forced by the studio to make it more kiddie friendly. Also, the respectfully redesigned ED-209s are great and as clumsy as they ever were. Also the scene in which Dr. Norton (Oldman as this film's morally righteous (!) version of Bob Morton) demonstrates to Murphy how much of him is actually left inside the machine. Samual L. Jackson does a kind of impression of Republican soundhorn Bill O'Reilly but no-one will remember and rightfully so.

Kinnamanin esittämä kyborgi on heti muutoksesta lähtien liikaa konstaapeli Murphy uuden olemuksensa sisällä ja alkuperäisen sydäntä särkevä herääminen menetettyyn inhimillisyyteen on melko juosten kustu tällä kertaa.

I had to include this, for quality's sake. Never noticed the music before, from the first Terminator:

Directed by Timo Koivusalo Starring Samuel Shipway, Sanni Paatso, Vesa Vierikko, Minttu Mustakallio

This is the latest in the family film series of Ricky Rapper with the title translated as Ricky Rapper and Slippery Lennart. Ricky's or Risto's mom decides to find her son a solid father figure but is too blind to the obvious choice of family acquaintance Lennart. With Risto and a selection of wardrobe to help him, Lennart starts to role play less than suitable candidates to make himself appear more suitable. Like before, the film includes musical numbers which could've easily been left out but it's understandable why they are present considering the main character. Vierikko as Lennart is by far who to thank for keeping any interest in the plot and film altogether and actually succeeds in bringing few laughs with him. Otherwise it's basic family fare. Thanks to Vierikko I give it three out of five.

Directed by Wayne Kramer Starring Paul Walker, Vera Farmiga, Chazz Palminteri, Cameron Bright, Karel Roden

Much like in the case of the previous review, I wanted to visit a piece of work from a departed talent. Running Scared is an electifying crime thriller with a pace so furious it almost parallels Crank. No wonder Tarantino likes this film since it has eccentric, corrupt characters and dialogue worthy of recognition. Have to also mention that I would never have thought that Farmiga could be as sexy as she appears in this. Also Walker, of whom I've never been a particular fan of, delivers a good performance. If he had been constantly on fire like this (no pun intended), I might've been interested in following his work with more interest. No good person deserves the fate he got and Running Scared showed us that there was potential. The circumstances just needed to be right.

Paljolti kuten edellisen tekstin kohdalla, halusin visiteerata hiljattain edesmenneen näyttelijän katalogia. Running Scared on raivoisasti etenevä rikostrilleri, jonka hektinen tahti tuo ajoittain mieleen jopa Stathamin Crank-leffat.

Directed by George Clooney Starring Ryan Gosling, Evan Rachel Wood, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman

After Hoffman's unexpected and highly unfortunate demise I decided to take on this film which had been waiting its turn on the shelf. The movie which depicts dirty politics behind the presidential campaign of Gov. Mike Morris (Clooney) starts slow but picks up pace once the idealistic facades start coming down. The statements of moral political corruption are simple and clichéd but good, solid performances keep the piece alive. Including that of Hoffman. Watching this film was melancholy to say the least, much like Killing Them Softly after James Gandolfini passed away. So many great ones taken too soon, so many poor actors still around. Thanks universe.

Kiitti vitusti, universumi.
