Directed by Eli Craig
Starring Alan Tudyk, Tyler Labine, Katrina Bowden, Jesse Moss, Philip Granger

The most inspired horror comedy in recent memory. A bunch of high scoolers profile two gentle hillbillies as serial killers and what ensumes is a string of hilarious misunderstandings and gory deaths. The film somehow reminds me of Evil Dead 2 in terms of it's twisted sense of humor and even the quirky execution of the scenes. And that's about as high a compliment one can give to a film of this genre. Labine and the always reliable Tudyk (Firefly, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon) are outstanding as the misunderstood guys on vacation in their summer cottage. Director Craig is definitely a talent to keep an eye on because with Tucker & Dale he has created, seamingly very easily, a working symbiosis of horrible deaths and comedy. A true gem among the countless remakes, boring sequels and reboots the horror genre has been reduced to in the past decade.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil on meillä Suomessa suoraan kiekolla (kulttuuririkos!) julkaistu kauhukomedia kahdesta takametsien heinähatusta, jotka joutuvat vilkasmielikuvituksellisten koululaisten profiloimiksi hulluiksi murhaajiksi.

SOURCE CODE (2011)

Directed by Duncan Jones
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright, Michael Arden, Russell Peters

Holy fuck. This brilliant thriller came straight out of nowhere. I loved this movie. The only reason I don't award Source Code with five statues is the very end of the movie. It's not bad by no means but could've been better in my humble opinion by just cutting it a bit shorter. I think I'm not spoiling the movie to anyone if I say the film should've ended on the frozen moment. It would've ended it on a down note but the movie would've had such a beautiful ending. Look, in the end this doesn't matter so much anyway because Source Code is still a movie that grabs your attention from the get go and keeps throwing enough interesting twists and even solid character development to keep you nailed to your seat. The basic premise alone is fresh and brilliant. Gyllenhaal plays a soldier who, thanks to the miracles of modern technology, has to relive a terrorist attack until he's figured out who is behind it and how to prevent it. Next to Inception and Limitless, Source Code is the most clever action thriller to come out in years. A special mention has to given for Chris Bacon who composed the film's magnificent score. Who is this guy and why the hell hasn't he done more big films?! Listen to the music of this film and give this guy more gigs, stat! Seek Source Code out, now!

Source Coden musiikki on upeaa kuunneltavaa. Antakaa tälle jäbälle lisää isoja leffoja sävellettäväksi, nyt!

HALL PASS (2011)

Directed by Bobby & Peter Farrelly
Starring Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate, Nicky Whelan, Richard Jenkins, Stephen Merchant

Well, the Farrelly brothers finally managed to bring up a film that is almost as good as their first films Dumb & Dumber and There's Something About Mary. Granted, Shallow Hal was hilarious as well. Owen and Sudeikis (to whom I've really taken a like into) play two men living in boring marriages until their wives decide to give them "hall passes", the freedom to do whatever they wish for a week without the restraint of marriage. With a lesser duo this might have failed miserably but Wilson and Sudeikis are brilliant and there are plenty of shamelessly hilarious gags to keep you grinning. At least I found myself laughing every five minutes and to me, that's a hell of a good ratio. Plus there's Stephen "UK's The Office" Merchant and Whelan's gorgeous tits. Hey, I'm just a regular guy. Deal with it.

Directed by Ville Jankeri
Starring Eero Milonoff, Niilo Syväoja, Jussi Nikkilä, Marjut Maristo, Veera Tapper, Tytti Junna, Ylermi Rajamaa

It seems to be nearly impossible for Finnish filmmakers to put out a lavish and blatant comedy. Even a film like Pussikaljaelokuva (internationally The Six-Pack Movie) which showcases the day of three out of work boozers just hanging out about town doesn't have the balls to be outright funny. Then again, that may not have been the intention in the first place and I might be wrong but it is just so frustarting that if I want to see a good comedy, I always have to turn to foreign films. The last outrageous comedies in this country were made by Pertti "Spede" Pasanen and his friends and later by a comedy group called Kummeli. Sure their films were dumb and perhaps closesd parallel to early Adam Sandler films but at least they were honestly funny.

The screenplay from the novel by Mikko Rimminen is humorous but the dialogue in the film tastes calculated and the style of it is ripped from Tarantino (meaning the characters just sit down and talk cooly about random everyday stuff and not about things that would lead to character or plot development).

The execution of the material at hand and the portayal of the characters mirror the whole piece unintentionally bad since the three guys are not particularly interesting (with the exception of Milonoff who really goes all out with his loser Henninen) and more criminally nothing really happens in the film. I can see why people here are most likely going to like this film and make it a hit domestically, but I personally was left hoping for more. Of everything. Especially sincere laughs which this film tries to offer but fails for the most part because the punchlines are calculated and obvious and thus often hollow. Still, I'm in no way pissed for having seen this. Pussikaljaelokuva is just a typical Finnish effort which sadly once again means that it's good but not great.

LIMITLESS (2011)

Directed by Neil Burger
Starring Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish, Robert De Niro, Anna Friel, Tomas Arana, Johnny Whitworth

Easily one of the perkiest and freshest thrillers I've seen in a while. A clear step up for De Niro as well who has really let his legendary standards down in the last decade or so. Seriously, what happened? The guy was known for having impeccable taste when it came to picking out good projects. Then came misfires like Showtime, the Meet The Parents sequels and Righteous Kill. Meh. Just wondering. Anyway, Limitless is the latest vehicle for Cooper to showcase his natural talent and charisma. He plays Eddie Morra, a down on his luck writer and a borderline loser who gets a hold of a mysterious pill which allows him to access the entire potential of his brain. He finds himself being capable of doing practicly anything but since nothing good in this life comes for free, Morra soon notices there are other interested parties and huge, dangerous powers to be in the game. For a guy named after fast food, Burger keeps the whole thing well in hand and the film is visually interesting and inventive almost to the point where you'd expect it to have been directed by Nevaldine/Taylor (Crank). A firework of a film and most likely the most interesting concept you're going to see for a while.

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke
Starring Amanda Seyfried, Shiloh Fernandez, Max Irons, Virginia Madsen, Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Julie Christie, Lukas Haas

Much like Chris Columbus was hired to duplicate the success of Harry Potter with Percy Jackson, now Hardwicke is trying to give us another Twilight. She succeeds too if you consider how staggeringly superficial and stupid this film is. The senior members of the cast (Oldman & Christie) try their best with the runny shit (aka the script) they are handed with but the younger stars don't even bother trying to act in their leading roles. Oh no no, their job is not to act but to just look good and flirt with each other as if that could be called character development. Red Riding Hood is basically shit wall to wall because it's origins are rotten to the core even before it starts. You know that the film was made with the intention of creating another shallow and cheesy teenage block buster franchise. It's all bullshit and literally the only good things are Oldman and Christie but even their presence isn't even nearly enough to lift this shit out of it's pretentious, greedy swamp.

And please do yourself a favor and stay away from the "making of" material. I found myself trying to grab something heavy which to chug at my TV when Hardwicke came on with her I-just-took-the-greatest-ever-sunday-morning-shit smile and started boasting how things in the movie get hot and steamy. Jesus! Fuck! Catherine, you're not a teenager anymore. Stop acting like one.

Aivan kuten kaksi ensimmäistä Harry Potteria ohjannut Chris Columbus palkattiin kopioimaan edellisen sarjan menestys kehnoon Percy Jackson-leffaan, on Hardwicke nyt tyrkyttämässä meille uutta Twilightia.

Ja kaiken pyhän nimissä, karttakaa kiekon "making of" materiaaleja. Kiitos.

Red Riding Hood at IMDb

Directed by Martin Campbell
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Peter Sarsgaard, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, Tim Robbins, Temuera Morrison, (voices) Geoffrey Rush, Michael Clarke Duncan

Once again, I just don't know what all the fuss has been about. Green Lantern was trashed by critics and deserted by audiences. Why? I seriously don't have the slightest idea. If it was because of some ill-fated depiction of the original DC Comic, then I really wouldn't know because I've never read it but otherwise Green Lantern is a solid movie. It has a strong story arc and though it's action is at times over the top, it still never fails to entertain. So what's the problem? Maybe because the film generated a negative buzz way before it was even finished and people just chose not to give it a fair chance? Possibly. Reynolds does his usual charm thing throughout but still manages to keep his performance steady. The real treat though is Sarsgaard's creepy Hector Hammond as the bad guy who receives telekinetic powers and a swollen forehead thanks to having contact with an alien entity.

SANCTUM (2011)

Directed by Alister Grierson
Starring Richard Roxburgh, Ioan Gruffudd, Rhys Wakefield

Sanctum was heavily advertised as an unbelievable 3D experience when it was coming out to theaters. I admit, in 3D on the big screen this underground and underwater adventure may have looked amazing but this film exactly goes to show that 3D is nothing more than a gimmick since when you take away the 3 dimensional element, all you're left with is a by-the-numbers, annoingly predictable and staggeringly badly acted borefest inside a bland cave system. The whole film is a let down on every aspect and only redeeming qualities are some amazing underwater visuals and a wee bit of sense of adventure in the first reel which sadly disappers when things go south for our characters. What the hell?

Sanctum at IMDb

Directed by Michel Gondry
Starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz, Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos, David Harbour, Tom Wilkinson, Edward Furlong

Blasted all to hell by critics and audiences around the world, I just cannot help but feel it has all been more than a bit overblown. The Green Hornet has it's flaws (Waltz isn't a very inspiring baddie this time and Diaz is really on board just beacause the film needs a random female lead) but over all the film's quite funny (if you enjoy the antics of mr. Rogen as I do) and surprisingly the action is executed well enough to keep you wide awake throughout which wasn't a given considering the flick's art house director Gondry (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Human Nature). Not necessarily a masterpiece and fans of the source material may be sorely disappointed, but any film with Tom Wilkinson and Edward James Olmos in it deserves a chance at least.

Toinen kohtalaisen onnistunut aspekti on Gondryn luotsaus toimintaelokuvan ohjaajana (onhan mies kumminkin pääasiassa tottunut tehtailemaan vakavampia tekeleitä kuten Tahraton Mieli). Gondry käsittelee räiskinnän mukavasti ja leffa liikkuu sulavasti eteen päin. Waltz (Kunniattomat Paskiaiset) on yllättävän hukassa pahiksena ja Diazin hahmo on mukana vain koska leffaan oli kai pakko ottaa joku naispääosa. Toisaalta kaikki tekeleet joissa on Tom Wilkinson ja/tai Edward James Olmos ansaitsevat jo heidän läsnäolollaan mahdollisuuden.

The Green Hornet at IMDb

Directed by John McTiernan
Starring Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones

An absolute best of all the submarine films I've seen. Based on the novel by Tom Clancy, the film's hero is Jack Ryan (played here by Baldwin and in later films by Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck) who believes that a rogue Soviet sub commander Ramius (Connery) is trying to defect to America when everyone else is convinced that he's on the verge of an attack. By far one of McTiernan's (Die Hard 1 & 3, Predator) best films and a proper thriller. Also composer Basil Poledouris deserves a mention for his magnificent score. Do yourself a favor and seek this out. NOW.

Henkilökohtaisesti The Hunt For Red October eli suomalaisittain Punaisen Lokakuun Metsästys on oma suosikkini kaikista tähän astisista sukellusveneleffoista. Conneryn esittämä Neuvostoliittolainen veteraanikomentaja aikoo loikata jenkkeihin ja ainoastaan Baldwinin esittämä Jack Ryan aavistaa miehen todelliset aikeet samalla kun kaikki muut pelkäävät hyökkäystä ja aikovat upottaa Conneryn luotsaaman ydinsukellusveneen. Yksi parhaimpia koskaan valmistuneita trillereitä ja elokuvia ylipäänsä. Täydellisen jännitysnäytelmän viimeistelee Basil Poledourisin korvia hivelevän kaunis musiikki. Aivan saatanan hieno klassikko.

SCREAM 4 (2011)

Directed by Wes Craven
Starring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Mary McDonnell, Rory Culkin, Marley Shelton, Erik Knudsen, Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson, Kristen Bell, Anna Paquin, Roger Jackson

11 years have passed since we last saw the Ghostface killer. The first Scream is a classic. It not only revitalised the horror genre but was also one of the definitive films of the 90's. Scream 2 was good though a clear step down from the original and the third was just embarrasing. Scream 3 was a prime example of a sequel which was made for all the wrong reasons. Money for sure and perhaps the simple need for a completion of the trilogy. Scream 4 (or Scre4m) reunites the three main characters back together but the story leaves them on the sidelines in a way. After all it's a "new decade and new rules" which in this case means a younger and hippier cast such as Panettiere and "Julia's niece" Roberts. Scream 4 is by far the funniest of the bunch and for a while it rolls forward nicely and is very entertaining. Problems begin the second the ending comes along. The Scream films revolve around two main basis audiences are expecting: inventive and gruesome kills and the identity or identities of the killer(s). The slaughter is handled with good ideas but the revelation of those guilty is fucking shit. All credibility just goes out the window and if that isn't shit enough, the film is prolonged for a needless second "third act". It was good while it lasted until it wasn't. The film flopped at the box office and writer and father of the franchise Kevin Williamson must be bummed because he had envisioned this as a start for a new trilogy. Well shit. Maybe it'll still happen at some point but for now I am pleased to see it come to an end.

Directed by Jon M. Chu

Yes, I bravely plowed through this. Look, first off there are some minor redeeming qualities which in this case mean a very good construction of a documentary film.. or propaganda. If you leave the subject matter aside and focus objectively on the filmmaking of this "documentary", it is technically quite good. Never Say Never is entertaining and moves along at a good pace which bodes well for director Chu's next film project which will be the highly more demanding action sequel G.I. Joe 2 slated for 2012. That's where the quality ends though since the rest of it is just shameless self gratification which should not be viewed by anyone except extreme Bieber fans of whom this flick portrays quite an unflattering image as a squad of uncontrollable screaming fucking idiots (which I'm sure they are for the most part). The film tells of Bieber's meteoric rise to mega stardom all the way from when he was an irritating toddler and along the film several other celebrities show up to boast by his side including Usher, Sean Kingston, Miley Cyrus and Jaden "Will's son" Smith. Naturally there isn't a single word mentioned of his moral views on subjects such as abortion which Bieber doesn't "believe in" even in cases of rape. This was all a huge controversy in February of this year in a profile interview by Rolling Stone magazine. What it all boils down to is that Never Say Never is a VERY biased look into a teen sensation who is a very talented entertainer but also a growing balloon of hot air with a stupid hair cut and fucking ugly shades. The film even includes a sing-a-long part of his most irritating and famous (s)hit "Baby" and the production company MTV Films once again proves (on so many levels) that Music Television has next to nothing to do with music anymore. Like I said, for extreme fans only!

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never at IMDb

Directed by Renny Harlin
Starring Rupert Friend, Richard Coyle, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Val Kilmer, Rade Serbedzija, Mikko Nousiainen, Andy Garcia, Dean Cain, Jonathon Schaech, Antje Traue, Anna Walton, Heather Graham

Harlin's career as a director hasn't really been going that well in the last decade or so. Once one of the hottest directors in Hollywood has been reduced to making below average supernatural thrillers (The Covenant & Exorcist: The Beginning) and entertaining yet forgettable action flicks (Mindhunters & 12 Rounds). 5 Days Of War is based on the real conflict that took place in South-Ossetia in 2008. The film displays the events through the eyes of a war journalist (Friend) and his cameraman (Coyle). The two men encounter the traditional images of the horrors of war and capture a brutal execution on tape and set out to get this evidence of a war crime out to the uninformed international public. The movie was heavily financed by high ranking Georgia officials and the government (though officially they deny this of course) and is a really one sided argument of the events but even so, the film is quite entertaining and even moving. The budget was around 12 million dollars which is very little for a film of this kind of ambition and the lack of money shows in part considering the desired scale of the action set pieces. Still, 5 Days Of War is a very driven and mostly well executed but once again forgettable film.

5 Days Of War on meidän miehemme maailmalla, Renny Harlinin viimeisin pyristely ylös suoraan-DVD:lle-helvetistä.

I recently noticed that a new live action film project had made it's way onto director Zemeckis' filmography at IMDb. The film is called FlightDenzel Washington is attached to star and it's slated to come out in 2012.

Now, the reason this comes to yours truly as such a good news is that I for one have been living in misery as far as Zemeckis' directorial career has been concerned for the last decade. In the 80's and 90's Zemeckis directed an endless string of magnificent films from the Back To The Future trilogy and Who Framed Roger Rabbit to Forrest Gump, Contact and Cast Away with other solid projects in between. Then in 2004 began his motion capture animated period with The Polar Express. The film and the others like it he has made since then have been solid as far as story telling goes but that's where the fun has stopped. For me at least. Motion capture is a valuable tool but only in live action use such as in Avatar (the Na'vi tribe) and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy (the character of Gollum). In standard animation it becomes lifeless. The eyes are always dead and no matter how much the actors project, the performance doesn't come through as a whole. Personally I think it's better to do a fully animated feature without motion capture or just shoot the damn thing for real as live action. All of this is why I remain hopeful for Flight and the return of a great film director back to his roots. Where he has performed himself at his best.

That was my two cents on this matter.

Ohjaaja Robert Zemeckisin IMDb-filmografiaan ilmestyi hiljattain vuodelle 2012 merkitty projekti Flight, jonka pääosaan on kiinnitetty Denzel Washington.

2004 herra ohjasi ensimmäisen liikkeentunnistusteknologiaan perustuvan animaationsa, Napapiirin Pikajunan.

Directed by David Yates
Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Warwick Davis, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon, Tom Felton, Jason Isaacs, Cierán Hinds, Gary Oldman, Robbie Coltrane, Jim Broadbent and countless more legendary talents

I'd imagine that while it's a joyous occasion for the fans that they have finally seen the Harry Potter series in it's entirety, it must also be a bittersweet feeling since the end is also here. As I've said before, I personally didn't enjoy the first films because they were made for kids and understimated the older members of the audience. The latter films have been increasingly dark in tone which has made the viewing experience more and more close to my own liking.

Harry, Hermione and Ron (Radcliffe, Watson and Grint) continue searching for Voldemort's (Fiennes) three Horcruxes in hope that by destroying them it will make the difference in killing their vicious enemy. As they get closer to their goal it dawns on Potter that in order to defeat Voldemort he might have to make the ultimate sacrifice as the two finally face each other for the final face off.

In a way Deathly Hallows 2 doesn't really offer anything new to the magical world of Harry Potter but then again the formula works in the same way as that of James Bond. They too basically keep making the same film over and over but crucially it's a pattern that works since we keep coming back for more. I'm not a Potter fan. I like the movies but they've hardly changed my life in one way or another. To me, what they are is harmless entertainment. I haven't read any of the books so there's no need to remind me how much better they are on the page. As a series the movies have steadily gotten better with each installment.  The two previous films received the worst rep for being dull and merely showcases for this final film but I think they were good pictures although my personal favorite will remain The Order Of The Phoenix. In Deathly Hallows 2 the action is a very important ingredient and the there's not a dull moment in sight. The amazing ensamble cast is a joy to watch and even Smith gets a piece of the action though many of the legendary actors in supporting roles (Broadbent and Oldman for example) are given leftovers which is a disgrace. Deathly Hallows 2 is a fitting and entertaining end to one of the most popular film series in the medium's history.

I went to see this film in 3D and in some scenes the effect was gorgeous but over all (as in all 3D films) I don't think I brought much difference to the finished film. 3D is a gimmick. The new technology looks good but it might all just be a passing trend because at the end, it really is just a carrot to sell more expensive tickets. In fact, I personally still take the regular 2D over 3D any day.

KITEYTETTYNÄ SINIVALKOISILLE
Loppu tuli. 3D on kikka.

VEIJARIT (2010)

Directed by Lauri Nurkse
Starring Mikko Leppilampi, Antti Luusuaniemi, Pihla Viitala, Hennariikka Laaksola, Malla Malmivaara

Veijarit (internationally released as The Hustlers) is about two friends (Leppilampi and Luusuaniemi) who are womanizers and heavy nightclub hitters. Well wouldn't you know it, one of them falls for a sweet girl and what ensues is a broken bromance. I was personally really waiting for an outrageous comedy about two obnoxious men chasing tale in Helsinki in the wake of, say The Wedding Crashers. No. The film turns into a drama which goes down the same path we've seen countless times all the way to the ridiculously stupid ending. Shit, is it really that much of a gamble for these filmmakers to really go for it with the comedy? Everything always has to have such a dramatic edge it ruins the comedy aspect. Director Nurkse recently directed a decent TV crime series Tappajan Näköinen Mies (roughly translated Man Who Looks Like A Killer) and maybe that's what he ought to pursue next: a thriller. Because judging from this, before he grabs another lighter script, the man needs some practice.

Veijarit at IMDb

Directed by Ben Ketai
Starring Kiele Sanchez, Rhys Coiro, Diora Baird, Harold Perrineau, Mia Kirshner

Well, serves me right for having trust in a straight-to-DVD release. The first 30 Days Of Night (2007) film is still the best vampire film to come out since Blade II (2002) and it is powerful for all the reasons that have been forgotten in this joyless, by the numbers, numbing piece of shit sequel. The first film was genuinly disturbing and the vampires were more like mysterious savage animals than anything else. They didn't speak English but only their own language which made them even  more distant from you and me and the film utilized effectively the fear for the unknown. In Dark Days they do speak English and resemble cheap Bond villains with their henchmen. The script has all the excitement of a roll of toilet paper, the cast is wall to wall amateurs (with one exception, what the fuck is Perrineau [HBO's "OZ", the Matrix sequels)] doing here? Is he really this hard up for cash?!), Ketai can't breathe life even to the simplest of action scenes and the sets are the usual factory floors and tunnels with endless piping running through them. David Slade, who directed the first 30 Days Of Night made even Twilight: Eclipse look decent. I'll bet my huge balls that no-one from this 92 minutes of boredom will ever pull of anything as admirable as that.

30 Days Of Night: Dark Days on suoraan DVD:lle tuotettu vitun paska jatko-osa vuoden 2007 hienolle vampyyrirainalle 30 Päivää Kaamosta.

Directed by Michael Bay
Starring Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, John Turturro, Frances McDormand, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Patrick Dempsey, Alan Tyduk, John Malkovich, Ken Jeong, Julie White, Kevin Dunn, Glenn Morshower, Buzz Aldrin, (voices:) Peter Cullen, Leonard Nimoy, Hugo Weaving, Charles Adler, Frank Welker, Jess Harnell, James Remar

Well, time to bring on the wrath of thousands of die hard TF fans and declare this a successful trilogy throughout. Many would say that Bay couldn't direct traffic to save his life let alone good movies but in my opinion that's all how you look at it. And yes, there truly are different angles. You can't seriously win an argument against these films by comparing them to the likes of Pulp Fiction or Citizen Kane. Those films are art and hardly what you may call entertainment for a friday night. Transformers on the other hand is that kind of a film. And there really is no harm in that.

Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) is now a college graduate and looking for a job. He's been dumped by Mikaela (who was played by Megan fox in the two previous films and was fired from TF3 by executive producer Steven Spielberg for calling Bay a nazi) and is now dating Carly (drop dead gorgeous Victoria's Secret angel Huntington-Whiteley). The dormant Decepticons have been plotting a scheme ever since the first Apollo moon landing and with treacherous human allies are about to come down hard on humanity unless the Autobots stop them.

The third film in the series improves on the previous installments on the humor front which has always been Bay's Achilles heel. He's really into a kind of loud ghetto humor depicted in the first film by the usually quite irritating Anthony Anderson and in the first sequel by the fucking annoying Autobot Twins. In Dark Of the Moon much of the comedy rests on LaBeouf's comedic timing and physical comedy and luckily that's one thing he's very good at. Also Malkovich shines in a bit part as Witwicky's eccentric boss and Jeong from The Hangover fame manages to pull of his first role where I don't feel like punching him in the face. The first hour and a half is quite easy going and there's a surprisingly large amount of plot building which, in a tradition, culminates in to the last hour of almost non-stop action. The film owes much of it's gravitas to McDormand's presence. It's immediately a different ball game when she is on screen because her performance is very commanding and spot on for this movie. The effects are absolutely photoreal and the Academy will really make an ass of itself if the special effects statue doesn't finally come this way. Also, it's always an unforgettable experience to hear Cullen as the voice of my greatest hero, Optimus Prime but the addition of Nimoy as the voice of Sentinel Prime really finishes the geeky experince for myself and no doubt many others. Especially with all the fun Star Trek and Spock references. Then again, he's not a new commer to Transformers having voiced the character of Galvatron in the 1986 animated Transformers: The Movie.

People and especially fan boys just love to bitch about stuff and the geeky die hard fans of G(eneration)1 Transformers series must have been digging into their starting positions as the first film was announced. Yes, Optimus Prime trampled some flowers in the Witwicky backyard in the first film and everyone grabbed their torches and pitchforks. Shit, really?! You're gonna blacklist a whole film for one throw away joke? In that case the joke's on you, buddy. And the fact that they updated the designs of the characters? Well if you look at the whole thing objectively and stay true to what you'll find, it's a simple fact that they had to. If you would've simply transferred the medium on screen as it was in the 80's series, the whole thing would've looked fucking ridiculous and you wouldn't have been able to take any of it seriously. You fan boys know this, but can't admit to it. Then there's the whole international grudge thing against Michael Bay. Why? Okey, it's very fair to say the man is no Ingmar Bergman or Stanley Kubrick but then again no-one has ever claimed he was. Bay himself once said something along the lines of "I make films for 12 year old boys. Is that such a crime?" and I can't help but wonder the same myself. Once again, people love to complain when it's their turn or when they have the opportunity to do so. Pathetic. I'm sure there are objective people out there who honestly hate these adaptations of Transformers and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But if it's because you just have lots of misguided random anger or you're just basically an egotistical prick or want to go with the flow and are afraid of standing out while you actually love these films, then you've got nothing. Fucking NOTHING. In fact, I believe most of the lame ass internet trashers haven't even seen all of these films or none of them but still love to fucking bitch and moan about how Michael Bay sucks balls and how he ruined their childhood memories. Fucking face the facts, adjust and deal with it, douchebags. Your complaints are not gonna stop Bay from making movies and by the way that's another fun fact.

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon at IMDb

Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Finally the long wait is over and Transformers: Dark Of The Moon opens in cinemas TODAY. I've been a huge Transformers fan ever since I was a kid and used to watch them at my grandma's house.

I for one have been very pleased with the work Michael Bay's done with these films. Lots of TF-fans (and especially of Generation 1 or G1 [= the first animated series from the 80's]) have been cursing Bay to the lowest levels of hell for his vision of Transformers but seriously people, you could not have made these films to fit the style of the 80's. The format had to be brought up to date and that meant redesigning some of the characters from head to toe. Granted, Megatron looks like a mess, but then again they did in my opinion preserve his attitude. Besides, these movies have the absolutely legendary Peter Cullen as the voice of the equally legendary Optimus Prime. That alone brings a joyous tear to my eye. One of my greatest hopes would be to meet Cullen someday. That man ROCKS!

I could go on and on but I have to start getting ready for the screenings. Yes, in plural because I'm going to see this film three times today at the premiere! Stupid? Maybe. Waste of money? Some may see it that way. Fun? Hell YES. Review will be online tomorrow at the latest.

Rahan tuhlausta? Varmasti jonkun mielestä. Typerää? Kenties. Hauskaa? Kyllä vain. Arvostelua tulee viimeistään huomenna.

Autobots, transform and roll out..!

Tatskan (ainoan tähän mennessä) kävin ottamassa 10.12.2010.
