Directed by Ridley Scott
Starring Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Benedict Wong, Guy Pearce
Fucking finally. When it was announced that Sir Ridley himself was going back to the well and making another Alien film, there wasn't a fanboy on the planet who didn't jizz his pants (myself included). Surprisingly the result has set some of them back and personally I can't figure out why. I truly enjoyed this film.
Scott made a decision early on to leave the original alien creature designed by H.R. Giger out and focus on bigger themes about our own existence and the origins of the Alien saga itself. This is a brilliant move and almost even mirrors the rebooting of the Bond franchise though this isn't a reboot but a prequel. Much like Bond had the fucking disaster called Die Another Day, the Alien saga had Alien Resurrection which was such a horrible misfire, a fresh perspective was the only choice after. I would've been disappointed if Scott had offered simply more of the same. Prometheus is filled with good science fiction that drills down to the core questions but still delivers the scares.
Allekirjoittaneesta on vauhdilla tulossa todellinen fani.

Directed by Steven Spielberg

I love Spielberg's films. Even at their worse they are perfectly watchable (The Lost World: Jurassic Park) and at their best, absolute classics that bring a tear of joy to your eye even when you just reminisce about them (Jurassic Park, Raiders Of The Lost Ark). Then there are the ones that kind of fall between. This is the category for War Horse. By no means is it a bad film. It's very well written by perhaps the best screenwriter in the world, Richard Curtis (the man behind such works as Notting Hill, Love Actually, The Black Adder, Mr. Bean) and the photography, music and production design are all top knotch. What's missing is mysteriously the ultimate emotional impact. There are touching and utterly brilliant moments (for example the truce between soldiers to help the titular horse, Joey) throughout but somehow the film never reaches that point where it just breaks you down. And you are waiting for it.

Directed by Neveldine/Taylor
Starring Nicolas Cage, Violante Placido, Idris Elba, Ciarán Hinds, Christopher Lambert
I sort of had expectations for this one since the director duo has made a few exciting action movies with their energetic shooting and editing style. It fitted nicely to Statham's Crank films and even the underrated Gamer, but for this Ghost Rider sequel.. no. The script is all over the place, the performances are largely mediocre and forgettable (with the slight exception of Elba) and the film just simply doesn't work. The fact that the budget was basically cut in half from the first film ($110m to $57m) also does damage and if you're happy to see Lambert in a big film after a while, don't hold your breath. This is just an inch away from being a by-the-numbers straight-to-DVD sequel. Actually, here in Finland it came out just as that.
