Directed by Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud
Starring (voices) Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Jemaine Clement, Jack McBrayer, Danny McBride
There have only been a hadful of really good and funny CG animated movies since Toy Story back in 1995. The recent years have produced only few truly great ones such as The Incredibles (2004) and the two Madagascar (2005 & 2008) films. I'm not at all a fan of Shrek or any of these hacky wannabe clever inside-joke-movies. And though Despicable Me doesn't fall into that category, it's still light on laughs, even half decent jokes and only scores with a couple of nice set-ups. The only really worthy reason to see this film is Carell's performance as the "evil" main character of Gru. Carell uses funny accents and his voice has that special quality which by itself has made audiences love his performances and has been crucial especially in the character of Maxwell Smart in Get Smart (2008). Carell doesn't have to be seen in order to be hilarious. The minions are funny too.
