The Avengers has to be the single most elaborate film project ever designed. You have to remember that it's not just this single movie, but a whole series of blockbuster films that were all leading up to this effort. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger all had their own introductiory flicks and supporting heros, Black Widow (Johansson) and Hawkeye (Renner) both had minor roles in those films.
The Avengers is as epic as a summer flick can possibly be with it's state of the art CGI and sheer scale. Whedon isn't very experienced as a director having been mostly a writer but his scifi action film Serenity, which was a spin-off from Whedon's own cult TV show Firefly, was a good rehearsal and he has no hang-ups about action and lets it rip for the whole buck. This film will surely satisfy nearly all who go see it because not only is it a great action movie (unlike Alien Resurrection), it is also a functioning character piece (unlike Alien Resurrection).
