VUOSAARI (2012)

Directed by Aku Louhimies
Starring Amanda Pilke, Laura Birn, Sean Pertwee, Deogracias Masomi, Jasper Pääkkönen, Taneli Mäkelä

Vuosaari or Naked Harbour as it is internationally known is part of what could be called "the misery series" from director Louhimies. The film tells intertwining stories of bunch of characters and in part deals with cancer and it has been said that this is because Louhimies himself is a cancer survivor and the film was his way of letting out feelings concerning the experience.

Naked Horbour will likely feel fresh and beautiful to foreingers not familiar with Finnish cinema but for me, it was everything I expected it to be and that exactly is the problem. It seems that Finnish film can only be considered art if at some point there are naked men running outdoors while possibly even yelling "perkele!" (equivalent to "goddamn it") and everyone's fucking each other because they are emotionally numb. Well boo-fucking-hoo. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from a by-the-numbers teen soap opera! Except minus the fat guys running naked outdoors. Maybe.

The characters are all in misery, nothing feels redeeming and life just keeps kicking them in the head. One might call this art but when every serious Finnish drama deals with the exact same issues in the exact same mood and fashion, it gets old real fucking quick. Are we not capable of truly creating something new emotionally and visually? Paha Maa (Frozen Land), the film in the series Louhimies did before is far better in every way. It too handles the same subject matters but at least the idea was semi-fresh at the time. Naked Harbour is a remake on an emotional level but offers nothing new. The phrase nothing new also includes yet another interracial storyline offering a black man with a white woman. Is it racist to have those roles reversed or why is it that we aren't seeing it in cinema? Anywhere? Or is this perhaps a case of "positive racism"?

SINIVALKOISILLE
Louhimies itsekin on tehnyt samanlaisen toisiinsa kietoutuvien kohtaloiden draaman jo paremmin filmillä Paha Maa, eikä Vuosaari tuo mixiin mitään uutta henkisesti eikä visuaalisesti vaan jää eräänlaiseksi Pahan Maan emotionaaliseksi uusintaversioksi.

PROMETHEUS (2012)

Directed by Ridley Scott
Starring Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Benedict Wong, Guy Pearce

Fucking finally. When it was announced that Sir Ridley himself was going back to the well and making another Alien film, there wasn't a fanboy on the planet who didn't jizz his pants (myself included). Surprisingly the result has set some of them back and personally I can't figure out why. I truly enjoyed this film.

Scott made a decision early on to leave the original alien creature designed by H.R. Giger out and focus on bigger themes about our own existence and the origins of the Alien saga itself. This is a brilliant move and almost even mirrors the rebooting of the Bond franchise though this isn't a reboot but a prequel. Much like Bond had the fucking disaster called Die Another Day, the Alien saga had Alien Resurrection which was such a horrible misfire, a fresh perspective was the only choice after. I would've been disappointed if Scott had offered simply more of the same. Prometheus is filled with good science fiction that drills down to the core questions but still delivers the scares.

I'm trying to dance around the story since I don't want to give anything away to those who haven't seen the film. Suffice to say there's no Ellen Ripley. There's no Giger's alien (?). There is a good film with interesting theories and solid suspence. Also, once again Idris Elba (Thor, 28 Weeks Later) manages to bring the most personal and laid back performance in the film. I'm fast becoming a real fan of this guy.

Allekirjoittaneesta on vauhdilla tulossa todellinen fani.

WAR HORSE (2011)

Directed by Steven Spielberg
Starring Jeremy Irvine, Peter Mullan, Emily Watson, Niels Arestrup, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch

I love Spielberg's films. Even at their worse they are perfectly watchable (The Lost World: Jurassic Park) and at their best, absolute classics that bring a tear of joy to your eye even when you just reminisce about them (Jurassic Park, Raiders Of The Lost Ark). Then there are the ones that kind of fall between. This is the category for War Horse. By no means is it a bad film. It's very well written by perhaps the best screenwriter in the world, Richard Curtis (the man behind such works as Notting Hill, Love Actually, The Black Adder, Mr. Bean) and the photography, music and production design are all top knotch. What's missing is mysteriously the ultimate emotional impact. There are touching and utterly brilliant moments (for example the truce between soldiers to help the titular horse, Joey) throughout but somehow the film never reaches that point where it just breaks you down. And you are waiting for it.

Directed by Neveldine/Taylor
Starring Nicolas Cage, Violante Placido, Idris Elba, Ciarán Hinds, Christopher Lambert

I sort of had expectations for this one since the director duo has made a few exciting action movies with their energetic shooting and editing style. It fitted nicely to Statham's Crank films and even the underrated Gamer, but for this Ghost Rider sequel.. no. The script is all over the place, the performances are largely mediocre and forgettable (with the slight exception of Elba) and the film just simply doesn't work. The fact that the budget was basically cut in half from the first film ($110m to $57m) also does damage and if you're happy to see Lambert in a big film after a while, don't hold your breath. This is just an inch away from being a by-the-numbers straight-to-DVD sequel. Actually, here in Finland it came out just as that.

Ghost Rider: Koston Henki antoi alun perin toivoa innovatiivisen ohjaajakaksikkonsa ansiosta, joiden ylienerginen kuvaus- ja editointityyli on sopinut yllättävän hyvin mm. Crank-leffoihin ja jopa hieman aliarvostettuun Gameriin. Nyt on toinen juttu. Liekehtivä mopo on pahasti hukassa.

Directed by Joss Whedon
Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgård, Clark Gregg, Gwyneth Paltrow, (voice) Paul Bettany

The Avengers has to be the single most elaborate film project ever designed. You have to remember that it's not just this single movie, but a whole series of blockbuster films that were all leading up to this effort. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger all had their own introductiory flicks and supporting heros, Black Widow (Johansson) and Hawkeye (Renner) both had minor roles in those films.

So was it all worth it? Yes. Very much so. Though honestly, even if The Avengers would've bombed we still would've had two great Iron Man movies (I know the second one took flack from fanboys but personally I loved it), because let's face it: Downey Jr.'s eccentric billionare Tony Stark is and has been the cream of the crop the whole ride and his films alone deserve a deep appreciating bow. As was the case in his own films, Stark steals the show in The Avengers as well, though the other superheros don't fall short thanks largely to a solid script from creative TV icon Whedon (who's still paying off his debt on my shit list for Alien Resurrection). All the Avengers have their own plotlines and they work quite well without being heavy enough to drag the film down as a whole.

Shame the studio decided against rehiring Norton as Bruce Banner/Hulk (I guess out of being too demanding and hands on with the material) but Ruffalo sits well in the role that's now been filled by three able actors since Ang Lee's artistic but still very solid version back in 2003. Lee's film is also another example of the elaborate design that's gone into "the Avengers initiative" since in order for the character arcs to match for this film, the studio had to disregard Lee's Hulk entirely and reboot only five years later with The Incredible Hulk and work from there.

The Avengers is as epic as a summer flick can possibly be with it's state of the art CGI and sheer scale. Whedon isn't very experienced as a director having been mostly a writer but his scifi action film Serenity, which was a spin-off from Whedon's own cult TV show Firefly, was a good rehearsal and he has no hang-ups about action and lets it rip for the whole buck. This film will surely satisfy nearly all who go see it because not only is it a great action movie (unlike Alien Resurrection), it is also a functioning character piece (unlike Alien Resurrection).

The Avengers (eli suomalaisittain myös nimellä Kostajat) on kaiketi kaikkien aikojen massiivisin yksittäiseen elokuvaan johtanut projekti, sillä täytyy muistaa että vaikka kyseessä on nyt vain yksi elokuva, sen valmistelu on vaatinut kokonaista viisi ison budjetin filmiä. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man-leffat, Thor ja Captain America tulivat kaikki edellä, jotta valtavirran katsojat (johon sarjakuviin perehtymättömänä itsekin kieltämättä kuulun) tietäisivät varmasti keitä The Avengers-elokuvan päähahmot ovat.

HAYWIRE (2011)

Directed by Steven Soderbergh
Starring Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Antonio Banderas, Michael Angarano, Mathieu Kassovitz

Soderbergh is known for often going for an all star cast (for example in Ocean's Eleven, Contagion and Traffic) and Haywire fits right in this bill. He also takes chances with new and/or unlikely talents (such as hardcore pornstar Sasha Grey in The Girlfriend Experience) and now with mixed martial arts fighter Carano whom he spotted on TV one night and thought she'd make a great action star. Soderbergh hasn't always hit the mark as a director, but oh shit was he right about Carano. I'm in love with this woman. She can actually act, the fight scenes have a whole different kind of energy since she REALLY knows what she's doing and honestly, Carano isn't hard on the eyes either. Angelina Jolie who?

What comes to Haywire itself, hardcore agent film lovers might be a bit disappointed 'cause the mood isn't as hectic as Bourne or as loose as M:I but if going into this with an open mind, Haywire may prove to be something of a little gem. The only true little minus comes from Soderbergh's use of music. It simply doesn't sit at times nor does it support the feel of the scene at hand as it's supposed to. Other than that, I found this to be fresh and care free little action film. And Carano aside, it was pure joy seeing Paxton do something besides his TV show "Big Love". Even if he has a little dick and it's pathetic.

On a sidenote, when I saw this they played the Expendables 2 trailer before the actual film and as Schwarzenegger's name came in last and the title of the movie was plasted on the screen the entire audience erupted in thunderous applause and cheers. I haven't been so moved in a while. After all, I grew up watching those 80's action classics and hold a special place in my movie freak heart for these guys. Can't wait for "EX2".

IRON SKY (2012)

Directed by Timo Vuorensola
Starring Christopher Kirby, Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Udo Kier, Stephanie Paul, Peta Sergeant

When The Phantom Menace was announced and people knew that a new Star Wars trilogy was on the way, it was pure excitement. Lucas himself was going to write and direct the fucking thing which got fanboys doing goddamn backflips. Then the film opened and everyone came out thinking "That was it? Really, was THAT it?!" And rightfully so. The generated hype was far more fun than the film itself. Sadly, the same can be said about this Finnish effort, Iron Sky. When it was announced that the creators of amateur internet phenomenon Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning were making a tongue-in-cheek film about nazis on the moon, everyone went ape shit. Myself included. Déjà vu of The Phantom Menace came to mind when I exited the movie complex.

Iron Sky looks absolutely gorgeous and the effects are on the level with any top Hollywood franchise but everything else is less than expected. Vuorensola does his best with the enormous project in hand but the finished product cannot escape the look and feel that he is still an amateur only this time with more money. His character direction is horrible and though this isn't a drama and it might not matter as much, it sadly ruins most punchlines since they're not delivered properly. Also whatever satire, political or otherwise, is being sought, it all fails because the script never elaborates them beyond the premises themselves. For example in Iron Sky Sarah Palin (or at least a character VERY much based on her) is the President Of The United States and that's it. There's no critical satire about her as a person or as a politician, at most only as a hard ball candidate running for a second term in office. Boring. Also just out of curiosity, when dealing with a racially themed film, why does it always have to be that a white woman falls for a black man? Why not a black woman falling for a white guy? Is that somehow politically incorrect? It'd sure as shit be at least something not seen in a long while. The only film which comes to mind where the pairing is the other way around is Lakeview Terrace, Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington being the couple with Sam Jackson's character not condoning the relationship. So guess it is. Can you say "filmmaker's white guilt"?

The nazis at least themselves have a few refreshing and amusing moments, thanks largely to a solid performance from Otto (Tomorrow Never Dies, Der Untergang) but then again B-movie legend Kier is a shallow cardboard character as the Führer of the moon. What a criminal waste. Iron Sky is only seldom as clever and funny as it wants to be and it feels like Vuorensola has forgotten the kind of humor and sincere silliness that made Star Wreck such a joy to watch. This film will no doubt be a cult hit at least here in Finland but personally I can't help but feel short changed. I admire that big, effect driven films are surfacing out here and that someone has the balls to do something different from the usual misery themed relationship dramas. It would still help that these films were made by professionals.

Directed by Bill Condon
Starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Billy Burke, Ashley Greene, Peter Facinelli, Maggie Grace, Sarah Clarke, Michael Sheen

The third part (Eclipse) of this controversial saga showed signs of improvement which wasn't much though considering the absolutely horrible quality of the first two entries. Now comes Breaking Dawn, the last of the books to be adapted, which has been split into two films in order to cash in on the sixpack drooling teen girls and *shivers* "Twilight-moms".

Good news is that like Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, part 1 is nowhere near the badly acted, written and directed torture of the first two films Twilight and New Moon. Bad news is that the good material only kicks in after the first hour which is spent entirely on the soapy and cheesy wedding of Edward and Bella followed by the equally cheesy honeymoon on a secret island off the coast of Brazil. The whole first hour could've been edited down to 20 minutes but the teens need their bad romance. As the film draws nearer to the end it becomes more intense (including the best scene in the saga so far as the wolves have a battle of will by the lumber yard) but also wackier and wackier (imprinting, human-vampire pregnancy [on a relative subject: how does an essentially dead vampire without blood pressure get a hard-on?!] etc). And the less said about the name of Edward and Bella's baby, the better.

Oh and by the way, all of you who truly hate Twilight with a vengeance and thought that these two films would be the end.. think again. Summit, the production company behind the series was recently bought by a bigger studio and why? You guessed it, in order to make more Twilight movies. But how can that be, there're no more books, right? Well, money talks in Hollywood and as long as there are teens throwing cash at this cow, they will figure out something. Sorry.

Twilight-saaga on edennyt neljänteen ja viimeiseen osioon. Tavallaan.
